I’m writing computer articles, installing & maintaining individual systems (often servers based on Linux), & handing out individual training in specific software systems. I also maintain a few web sites & provide business-critical support for some small businesses.
I have a reasonably good grasp of Internet principles, to routinely build & deploy name, web & email servers, SQL databases, backup systems, etc, securely. This includes NAT, port-forwarding, Virtual Services & VPNs. In less-technical areas, I teach people to use fundamental tools like office suites, email & news programs, web browsers, graphics tools, sound, file managers etc.
I started as a technician with a West Perth microcomputer retail store in 1980, & have worked as a programmer, technician &/or tutor in a variety of situations since; examples:
From 1987 to ’94, worked in all of the above categories for ChiroSoft in Rockingham, WA, re-building a vertical market package for chiropractors on FoxBase, C & x86 asm. Installed & maintained systems all over Aus & NZ in person or by ’phone. They were later bought, & aren’t related to a current “ChiroSoft” name.
In 1986, wrote a screen interface system for MPW Rural Development on a KayPro II & CP/M-80 2.2 using M80 assembler.
In 1984, installed & modified Palette CAD software on DEC (digital) PDP-11 & MicroVax using ForTran-77 & DEC Indirect, for a large mining company.
In ’96, made/modified Ingres reports on SCO Unix for Diamond State Data Services.
In ’95 & ’96, in absence of local work, ran astreet mail contract in Mount Barker, WA.
In ’97 through ’99 I did piece-work like installing Windows 3.11(!), 95 & 98 software & drivers, modifying websites & net services, instructing in applications & utilities. I also wrote tools & have made or made several Open Source software packages.
In 2000-’06 I ran CyberKnights Pty Ltd: installation, maintenance, programming & consultancy to businesses mostly in the Perth metropolitan area, mostly small businesses but also some manufacturers & reasonably-sized service industries. In February 2006, a traffic accident took me out of work for 8 months. I’ve been slowly & steadily returning to work as it becomes available.
I have worked as a purchasing officer for a steel firm, delivery driver, country postman, sound technician, disc jockey, farmhand, electrical installer, newsletter editor, bulldozer driver & auto mechanic. I am always willing to turn my hand to something new.
To tertiary admission at Geraldton Senior High School, TAE aggregate of 358.7 (University of Western Australia scale).
Business skills development via New Enterprise Scheme (now NEIS) Small Business.
Personal development through Sabre Training (Dwellingup, integ. w/another co.).
Personal communications development through Cannon Communications.
Thank you for taking the trouble to read this. If you have any time, please consider responding to provide feedback. If I can make my words more useful, good. If anything is unclear, or not specified, please ask.
Please consider employing me. I live in Perth, Western Australia, which has plentiful access to places from Clarkson to Mandurah (via Fremantle, Midland, Joondalup, Whitfords, Chidlow, Murdoch, Kalamunda, etc), & am willing to travel (for example, I’m in Melbourne as I write, after passing through Adelaide, & will visit Sydney on this trip, have worked in Broome, Hedland, Hobart, Cairns, Kalgoorlie, Brisbane, Albany, The Alice, Canberra, etc).
Cheers; Leon
